Battery Storage
Battery Storage for SMUD Customers in Sacramento County
By STORPWR Engineering Team · Licensed CSLB #1127639 · Updated April 15, 2026
SMUD customers can get up to $10,000 in one-time battery incentives through the My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program, plus $880/year in ongoing quarterly payments with two Tesla Powerwalls. This is our most common install for SMUD customers — two Powerwalls exactly hit the $10,000 household cap and unlock the ongoing Tesla-only incentive. No confirmed program end date as of April 2026, but funds are paid on a first-come basis and amounts are subject to change as the budget depletes.
Key Takeaways — April 2026
- ✓ $5,400 per Powerwall one-time enrollment incentive ($500/kWh × 13.5 kWh × 0.8 holdback)
- ✓ $10,000 per household cap — 2 Tesla Powerwalls hits the maximum exactly
- ✓ $440/year per Tesla Powerwall ongoing ($110/quarter × 4 quarters). 2 Powerwalls = $880/year.
- ✓ 90-day enrollment window after Permission to Operate (PTO)
- ✓ Tesla Powerwall only qualifies for ongoing quarterly payments. Other approved brands qualify for one-time only.
- ⚠ No confirmed end date, but amounts may decrease as SMUD's budget depletes
How SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ Works
My Energy Optimizer Partner+ is SMUD's battery incentive and virtual power plant (VPP) program. SMUD pays you to install qualifying home battery storage, then pays ongoing quarterly amounts (for Tesla batteries) in exchange for permission to dispatch your battery during peak grid events. Your backup power during outages is preserved — SMUD can only dispatch from your spare capacity.
The program has two payment components:
- One-time enrollment incentive: Paid when you enroll your battery within 90 days of receiving Permission to Operate from SMUD. Calculated as $500 × your battery's rated kWh, minus a 20% holdback. A standard 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall: 13.5 × $500 × 0.8 = $5,400 per battery.
- Ongoing quarterly incentive (Tesla only): $110 per Tesla Powerwall per quarter for as long as you remain enrolled. $440/year for one Powerwall, $880/year for two.
The $10,000 household cap limits the one-time portion only. Without the cap, two Powerwalls would calculate to $10,800. With the cap, you receive exactly $10,000 — still the full maximum payout. Three or more Powerwalls don't increase the one-time payment, though they do scale the ongoing incentive ($330/quarter for 3+ Tesla Powerwalls, or $1,320/year).
Why Two Powerwalls Is the Most Common SMUD Install
Two Tesla Powerwalls is the sweet spot for SMUD customers because it hits the $10,000 cap exactly, provides 27 kWh of whole-home backup (enough for most 2,500+ sq ft homes including AC during summer heat), and doubles the ongoing quarterly incentive to $880/year. Three or more Powerwalls cost more but don't increase the one-time rebate.
Our installation data reflects this: the two-Powerwall configuration is the most common install we complete for SMUD customers. The reasons are both financial and practical:
- Maxes the incentive: You can't do better than $10,000 one-time regardless of battery count.
- Handles AC during summer: Sacramento summer AC loads can exceed 5 kW continuous. One 13.5 kWh Powerwall lasts 2-3 hours running AC; two last 4-6+ hours, enough for most PSPS or grid stress events.
- Whole-home vs. essential loads: One Powerwall typically runs "essential loads only" (fridge, internet, lights, some outlets). Two Powerwalls typically support "whole-home" including AC, EV charging, and pool pumps.
- Doubles ongoing income: $880/year passive income for the life of the program vs. $440/year with one.
- Solar + Battery future-proof: Sacramento homes adding solar later can fully charge 27 kWh from excess daytime generation.
The 90-Day Enrollment Window (Don't Miss It)
SMUD's enrollment incentive must be claimed within 90 days of receiving Permission to Operate (PTO) on your battery system. Miss the window and you forfeit the $10,000 one-time payment — this is the single biggest mistake we see when homeowners work with out-of-area installers who aren't familiar with SMUD's process.
The 90-day clock starts when SMUD grants Permission to Operate after final inspection. Enrollment requires:
- Enrolling in SMUD's Solar and Storage Rate (required to participate)
- Installing a qualifying battery brand (Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, Franklin, Sonnen, or Eguana)
- Submitting enrollment paperwork through SMUD's online portal
- Granting SMUD remote-dispatch access to your battery during peak events (20-30% reserve is preserved for home backup)
Stor Power handles the entire SMUD enrollment process for you. We submit the enrollment paperwork during system commissioning so the 90-day window is never at risk, and we coordinate directly with your battery manufacturer to configure VPP participation settings.
SMUD Service Area — Cities We Serve
SMUD serves Sacramento County and small portions of Placer County. Stor Power installs battery storage across SMUD's entire service area including Sacramento, Elk Grove, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, and all surrounding SMUD communities.
Cities where we install battery storage for SMUD customers:
If you're unsure whether your address is served by SMUD or PG&E, check your last utility bill — SMUD billing is distinctly different from PG&E. Some Sacramento County neighborhoods (Arden-Arcade, parts of Carmichael, Fair Oaks) are PG&E; for those customers, see our PG&E battery storage page.
Battery Brands Eligible for the SMUD Program
SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ accepts Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, SolarEdge Home Battery, FranklinWH aPower, Sonnen eco, and Eguana systems for the one-time incentive. Only Tesla batteries qualify for the ongoing quarterly payments, which is why two Tesla Powerwalls is our most common configuration.
| Battery Brand | One-Time Incentive | Ongoing Quarterly |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 2/3 | ✓ Up to $10K/household | ✓ $110/qtr per Powerwall |
| Enphase IQ Battery | ✓ Up to $10K/household | — |
| FranklinWH aPower | ✓ Up to $10K/household | — |
| SolarEdge Home Battery | ✓ Up to $10K/household | — |
| Sonnen eco / Eguana | ✓ Up to $10K/household | — |
Program End Date and Budget Status (April 2026)
As of April 15, 2026, SMUD has not announced an end date for the My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program. However, incentive amounts are subject to change as SMUD's program budget depletes. We recommend enrolling sooner rather than later to secure the current $5,400/Powerwall rate.
Unlike California's SGIP program (which closed most tiers December 31, 2025 for PG&E customers), SMUD's Partner+ program remains open and continues to accept new enrollments. SMUD has published no sunset date and has confirmed the program continues for the foreseeable future. That said, utility incentive programs are evaluated annually based on budget and grid conditions, and the $5,400/Powerwall rate could be reduced at any time.
Our recommendation: if you're considering battery storage as a SMUD customer, don't wait. Installation plus permitting plus PTO typically takes 6-8 weeks, and the clock on your 90-day enrollment window starts only after PTO. Rate reductions — when they happen — are typically announced with 30-60 days notice, not enough to plan an install around.
